Now I've been doing some research and getting some conflicting opinions regarding the 1.6 8v and 16v engine. The 16v produces more hp and torque (marginally) but the 8v has a bit more low end grunt (torque is lower in the rev range). Now the differences here don't bother me, I'm used to having to use the revs in the Mini so I'm not too bothered
