A loose gas cap. A faulty oxygen sensor. Bad spark plugs. A faulty mass airflow sensor. A check engine light that turns on and off intermittently is not uncommon. If the check engine light turns on and then off, it is possible that the main computer is not correctly registering the problems.
Garage suggests it could be £1000 to £1500 to replace, this is due to them saying it's around 8 hours labour, and if there is debris in the oil, they would want to change the oil, filter and clean the engine etc. This makes sense, and I've seen other things online suggest that it can be up to 12 hours labour.
