I would suggest stopping after season 6. Season 7’s writing was awful, but no one knew it at the time because they, myself included, thought season 8 might tie up loose ends and fix plot holes. It didn’t. It compounded on them exponentially. Literally every aspect of the show is phenomenal except the writing.
Fo example, if you like Game of Thrones, you may like Lost, as both shows are willing to kill off central characters regularily. HBO's Rome starring Mance Rayder as Julius Caesar and Edmure Tully as Brutus. Oh God, I'm just started rewatching Rome last week. It's even better than I remember.
I absolutely love the show and would definitely shell out the extra cash and support HBO by subscribing to HBO. Unfortunately and I'm currently without a job and the family decided that the premium package for Direct TV was no longer worth it so I lost HBO and all it's lovely shows.
50 Episodes. Code Geass is a well-written, well-paced, and well-produced sci-fi opera that examines the competing interests between an oppressive British regime and its oppressed, rebelling Japanese citizens. Lelouch vi Brittania is a discarded noble who seeks to exact revenge on the nobility that betrayed him.
So, my advice: watch the show first. If you can, watch it twice as you will get more things and understand the whole plot better (I was surprised when I realized I had missed so much). When you finish watching it, read them, it won't disappoint you at least as much as it would have if you had read the books first.
